Tai Chi, Qigong and Stretches – C2338136

We combine Tai Chi (Chen Man Ching short form) and Qigong movements with gentle stretching and strengthening exercises that benefit all parts of the body (i.e. neck, back, shoulders, hips, legs) to help to improve movement, mobility, balance, posture and general wellbeing. We discuss the importance of warm-up before starting to exercise as well as identifying the muscles being used and exploring the reasoning behind, and the health benefits of, the various stretches and movements covered. Introduction to Astronomy – C2338139

This course will take you on a journey starting with the Earth and explaining the essential building blocks needed for life to exist. Next you will explore the solar system and the Milky Way, moving on to look at the observable universe and current views about what the universe is made of. Einstein’s theory of relativity and the Big Bang will also be part of our study. You will learn about the night sky and how to make sense of it as well common types of telescopes, and may have the chance to use a special telescope to look at the Sun. It may also be possible to visit a local observatory subject to availability.

Hadrian’s Wall and the Romans – C2338180

This course will begin by looking closely at the decades of Roman expansion in northern Britain following 43 AD, and look more closely at the circumstances surrounding Agricola’s campaigns and the war against the Brigantes. We will go onto to consider the character of the so-called Stanegate and its purpose, before looking at the precise circumstances and possible motives for the commencement of Hadrian’s Wall itself. We will then go on to examine the key features of its construction and its key strategic features and fortresses, before examining the surviving evidence for settled life among the garrisons there in the 2nd century AD and their potential strategic involvement in Roman frontier policy in Britannia.

Ancient History: The Glory that was Greece – C2338143

During the term, you will learn about the archaeological, historical and epigraphic evidence for Classical Greece from 411 – 386 with particular stress on major political and social developments of the Spartan hegemony. This will include an analysis of the final defeat of Athens in the Peloponnesian War after 411, and the causes of the Spartan domination, and reasons for its continuation including the developing Greek relationship with the Persian Empire, including the March of the Ten Thousand. We will go on to look at how the defeat of Athens impacted upon its political and social life, but we will also continue to observe the changing nature of polis life in general, going on to explore the evidence for the revival of Athens and the gradual undermining of Spartan authority during the Corinthian War. You will be made familiar with the characters of Xenophon, King Agesilaus, and the importance of Plato for western philosophy.
