During the term, you will learn about the archaeological and historical evidence for Classical Greece from 379 – 356 BC with particular stress on the continued Spartan hegemony, and analysis of its downfall. This will include an analysis of the Spartan domination, and reasons for its failure.  We will continue to observe the changing nature of polis life, and explore the evidence for the revival of Athens and her maritime league during the period. You will become familiar with the characters of King Agesilaos, Dionysios I and II of Syracuse and Epaminondas and Pelopidas of Thebes. We will also look at technological and artistic developments in the Greek world during the same period; particular attention will be made to the works of Praxiteles.
